Malawi: Chikwina-Mpamba

Chikwina-Mpamba's Looking Toward a Brighter Future

This sponsorship project has closed. Throughout Chikwina-Mpamba, you can now see inspiring 'scenes of transformation, brought about through God’s grace and years of hard work. Thank you to our generous supporters who have helped change the lives of sponsored children by enriching the community in which they live. The future of Chikwina-Mpamba is in capable hands. These are a few of the areas we focused on in 2018.

Child Protection and Care

Boys and girls are safe and valued, well cared for by their families, and participating in their communities as agents of transformation.

  • Boys and girls help to improve their community. After an increase in traffic accidents along a main highway, 693 parents and children organized a demonstration in partnership with the social welfare office and police department. Children learned that they can make a difference.

Healthy Children and Families

Children and families are well nourished, protected from infection and disease, and have access to essential health services.

  • Over 2,000 people now have clean water access thanks to 30 new water taps, which brings the area's total to 284 taps.
  • Boys and girls are given the opportunity for a healthy start in life. Chronic malnutrition among children under 5 years old dropped from 42% in 2014 to 29.5% in 2018. This was made possible by a team of volunteers who provided door-to-door family counseling sessions on age-appropriate feeding practices and nutrition.

Education for Better Lives

Children have opportunities to learn and to develop their talents, young people are equipped for the future, and families and communities support children's education.

  • Students are given more resources at school. The program donated 550 books and supplies to schools. Additionally, 37 caregivers were trained to help their children study at home.
  • Children learn to read and write. By facilitating literacy fares and reading camps, students have more opportunities to learn.

Love of God and Neighbors

Children and families are growing spiritually, local churches are strengthened to demonstrate Christ's love in practical ways, and people are living at peace with their neighbors.

  • 35 Sunday school teachers were trained to nurture children's spiritual growth better. A pastor's group learned the Empowered World View model to help support their church members' spiritual and material lives.
  • More children are learning Christian values. In all, 83 girls and boys attended a Christian retreat for students. They learned about God's love for them and their neighbors. Additionally, they received guidance about choosing a career and a good life partner.

Because World Vision believes in a holistic community development approach, the statements and numbers above, recorded at a point in time, reflect not only our aspirational goals for these communities but are based on all children within the community that benefitted from the specific activity that's identified. Together, in partnership with you, we will work to make these goals a reality.
